St James’ Park, Newcastle

Hathaway delivered specialist external wall cladding works as part of the landmark redevelopment of St James’ Park, contributing to the transformation of one of the North East’s most iconic sporting venues.

Home to Newcastle United Football Club since 1892, St James’ Park underwent an extensive redevelopment between 1998 and 2000, transforming the historic ground into a modern, all-seater stadium with a capacity exceeding 52,000 spectators.

Working alongside main contractor Ballast Wiltshier, Hathaway were responsible for specialist external wall cladding works to the Milburn (West) and Leazes (North) Stands, forming part of the stadium’s ambitious Millennium Expansion.

The project presented considerable technical challenges, with the stadium’s substantial height, complex geometry and multi-level elevations requiring carefully coordinated cladding solutions.

Hathaway’s works incorporated steel-faced insulated cladding panels with Rockwool insulation cores, complemented by aluminium mullions, specialist panel junctions, thermal breaks and weather-sealing systems. The extensive façade arrangements also accommodated stair towers, windows, access doors and ventilation louvres, requiring precise detailing and integration across the development.

The redevelopment significantly increased the stadium’s capacity and established the distinctive architectural profile that remains a prominent feature of Newcastle’s skyline today.

Completed in 2000, St James’ Park stands as a significant example of Hathaway’s longstanding expertise in specialist architectural cladding, demonstrating the company’s ability to contribute to large-scale, technically complex construction projects.
