Developed by Land Securities and opened in 2002, The Gate formed part of a major regeneration of Newcastle’s Newgate Street, transforming the former Mayfair Ballroom site into a multi-level leisure destination. Bringing together a multiplex cinema, restaurants, bars and entertainment facilities, the development features a striking glazed frontage and a distinctive combination of architectural elevations and roof forms.
Hathaway’s involvement encompassed Kalzip standing seam roofing and vertical cladding systems, alongside Luxalon architectural panels across multiple areas of the development. The complex roofscape incorporated curved and pitched sections, mansard detailing, hips, ridges and valleys, requiring carefully coordinated solutions to accommodate the building’s varied geometry.
The works also involved extensive specialist detailing to canopies, soffits, parapets, gutters, stair towers and lift shafts. Particular attention was given to the interfaces between roofing, cladding, glazing and masonry, with bespoke flashings, cappings and junction details developed to integrate the different architectural elements.
The project demonstrates Hathaway’s technical expertise in delivering complex roofing and cladding solutions, contributing to a prominent Newcastle landmark that remains a major city-centre leisure destination more than two decades after its original opening.
