Hathaway were appointed to undertake specialist roofing and external wall cladding works as part of the main terminal extension at Newcastle International Airport, working alongside main contractor Sir Robert McAlpine.
The development represented an important investment in the airport’s infrastructure, providing additional terminal accommodation to support its continued growth and development as a major regional transport hub.
A defining architectural feature of the extension is its distinctive double barrel-vaulted roof, comprising two expansive curved roof sections separated by a central plant area. The design creates a striking profile that remains clearly identifiable within the airport’s terminal complex today.
Hathaway’s roofing package incorporated a Kalzip 400 aluminium standing-seam system, finished in silver, together with associated insulation, vapour control layers, guttering and specialist roof detailing. The curved roof construction required careful coordination of the roofing components to achieve the intended architectural appearance and long-term weather protection.
The external wall cladding works incorporated a combination of profiled metal sheets and insulated composite panels, including Kingspan systems, with metallic silver finishes selected to complement the roof architecture.
Working within the environment of an operational international airport, the project called for effective coordination between the various construction disciplines and careful integration of the new extension with the existing terminal buildings.
More than 25 years later, the distinctive curved roofs remain a prominent feature of Newcastle International Airport, demonstrating the lasting contribution of Hathaway’s specialist roofing and cladding expertise to one of the North East’s most important transport facilities.
