Safety

Over the years we have been instrumental in improving safety within the roofing sector and our commitment has not diminished.

This commitment is evident in our head office and fabrication facility as well as our sites, from senior management to the operative on the tools, safety is of uppermost importance.

We encourage feedback at every level and believe this is crucial to the continuous improvement process. We also believe consultation with employees is paramount in developing working solutions.

Health and Safety milestone reached - October 2010

We reached a milestone to be proud of, one million man hours worked without a reportable accident under RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995). This is a superb achievement for a Company of our size, working in the high risk environment that we do. Reaching this milestone is testament to all the hard work and commitment shown by all employees to work safely.

Best Large Company 2010 and Training Achievement 2010 awards

Northern Counties Safety Group has presented us with awards for the "Best Large Company 2010" and "Training Achievement 2010". In addition, 5 of our Site Managers have been chosen by NCSG to receive a certificate for their exceptional contribution to health and safety standards on site.

At site level safety is continually monitored by our experienced site managers with audits from our safety manager, supported by external consultants from Northern Counties Safety Group.

As well as being supported by the NCSG our commitment also extends to membership of The British Safety Council, Teesside Construction Safety Group and the Northern Roof Training Group.

This commitment has been recognized by the NFRC who have awarded us the gold award in their national safety awards and our accreditation to CHAS (Contractors Health & Safety Assessment scheme) and the SAFEcontractor scheme.

Our wish is to achieve an incident and injury free environment.

Training

Training is a key part of our commitment with the CSCS, CPCS and IPAF schemes being an intrinsic part of site operations. It is our belief that all operatives should carry appropriate training cards. We hold regular construction skills safety awareness courses as a refresher to keep operatives up to date with current legislation and best practice.

We are an NVQ assessment centre for level 2 roof sheeting and cladding as well as applied water proof membranes. We have four assessors and two internal verifiers. We are able to carry out this process on site as well as via the recently accredited EWPA route (Experienced Worker Practical Assessment).

This approach to training not only applies to the site operatives but all employees in our head office and factory facility.

Our site managers all hold SMSTS or IoSH qualifications and their commitment is paramount to our success.

Provision of first aid

The need for a First Aid provision is not overlooked. Our site managers are on a continuous rolling programme to keep them up to date and several of the larger installation crews have a first aider.

At our head office we have invested in oxygen resuscitation equipment and an electronic defibrillator with a number of fully trained staff.

Safety

Quote from Mike Evans - T5 Head of Health & Safety

"Heard that you had won the NFRC 'Presidents Prize', an award for outstanding achievement in the roofing and cladding sector for your work at T5. Just wanted to add my congratulations and say thank you for your efforts on T5, especially on Health and Safety. Please pass on my thanks to your team."

Safety Paramount

The largest construction site and busiest airport in Europe combined. 120 operatives on site at peak and over 250,000 incident free hours worked. The Hathaway safety culture enabled their on-site team to rise to the challenge of Heathrow terminal 5.

Personal Statement

Craig Penketh Craig Penketh CMIOSH SpDipEM
NCSG Operations Director

During my time as Operations Director for Northern Counties Safety Group it is evident that Hathaway Roofing regard safety as being equally important as quality and production.

At the core of their safety culture is an active involvement from the directors and senior management, that recognises that people are Hathaway Roofing’s greatest asset.

It is positive and encouraging to see that the motivation to continually improve their safety culture is helping drive down accidents in our industry, with this years figures being at an all time low.

Even in these tough economic times Hathaway roofing have implemented a successful health and safety management system that should be seen as a benchmark to other roofing organisations.

With the company’s continual improvement and commitment to safety, it is my belief that Hathaway Roofing are on the right track.
